    Knysna

My wife and I are taking a trip to Knysna in the next month and we are both really looking for ward to it. We managed to find some Knysna accommodation with a 5star guest house called House Hammond. Seems to be a very lavish establishment at a reasonable price.

    While we are in Knysna we have a few things planned;

    • Take a boat trip through the Knysna logoon
    • Go diving in the lagoon
    • Visit the elephant park
    • Visit monkeyland
    • Hiking around the mountains in the Knysna region

    Flights

    In the past three weeks I have flown four times, a return flight from South Africa to the UK and a return flight from the UK to Italy. Each time I went through passport control and customs I was left amazed at the shabby treatment and most of the times the lack of staff. Here are just a few of the blunders I saw;
    • A line of at least 80 people waiting to go through a metal detector while three other metal detectors stood switched off with 4 or 5 members of staff standing chatting about their weekend (I heard them clearly as I walked through to departures)... this was in Venice (Marco Polo airport
    • After collecting luggage and coming towards the area where you declare items there was no one around... not one person was there to check peoples bag after a plane with 300+ people had just landed... this was at Heathrow
    • After landing at Cape Town airport I had to tell three people the purpose of my visit then have my bag searched by two people, the first who did not believe that I had nothing to declare (no shoes, DVD's, CD's.. he said looking surprised) the second then asked if I had anything to declare, I told him the guy at the front had already asked and I told him I didn't... he then stuck his hand forcibly into my bag and began to rummage around asking if there were any dairy products, after 5 or so seconds he said to move on and then began to harass the next person
My opinion of  the state of the airports is they are in a poor state staff wise! The people do not give a shit!

    Greenland Voyages

    Greenland Voyages

Voyage around Greenland, the world's largest island, for a completely unique holiday experience. Few other holiday destinations on earth can rival Greenland's natural grandeur. Dominated by the world’s second largest icecap, Greenland is a vast and beautiful land. If you like magnificent, unspoilt scenery then a holiday to Greenland will be ideal for you.

Imagine exploring a vast remote wilderness, gazing out at Greenland's sparkling ice-bound landscape and breathing in crystal clear air. A holiday to Greenland offers visitors a true sense of adventure and inspirational landscapes. Explore the frozen outdoors - go on a musk ox safari tour where you will see some of Greenland 5,000 musk ox and keep a look out for reindeer, arctic hares and foxes along the way!

A holiday to Greenland is exhilarating and awe-inspiring whatever time of year you visit. But during winter the sea freezes over and giant icebergs are locked in place. On a winter voyage to Greenland you can explore and unwind as a sense of timelessness envelopes you in this cold, silent and strikingly beautiful world.

Visit Greenland when the fleeting Arctic summer arrives and you'll find twenty four hours of daylight and North of the Arctic Circle, the midnight sun. Watch as the landscape comes to life, as the pack ice breaks up and giant icebergs drift through the fjords. Migratory birds arrive, breed and depart, and hardy Arctic flora bloom and scatter seed before the first snowfalls herald the onset of another winter. The world’s largest island remains one of the last unspoilt wilderness areas. Pure air, magnificent scenery and a fascinating culture make Greenland one of the most exciting holiday destinations on offer.

    Venice in January

Well, its not long now till I am married (Dec 8th) and I can announce that I have booked a trip to Venice for our honeymoon :) I have been once before but it is my favourite city in the world - I cant wait!

We plan to go in January of next year, while this is winter in Europe the prospect of visiting Venice in summer (peak tourist season) does not grab me, I know it will still be busy in January but it wont be as manic. Also living in Africa I dont feel the need to go to a sunny destination as Jan will be peak summer in Cape Town.

The only thing I will need to be aware of visiting at this time of year is the potential for flooding, known as the Acqua Alta (High Water in Italian). This is caused by high tides, low atmospheric pressure and a strong wind blowing in from the shallow Adriatic Sea which blows water into the Ventian lagoon. This has nothing to do with Venice sinking (which has actually slowed down and is set to stop completely if measures from the Italian government are successful), but instead mother nature going through its winter motions.

I just need to make I pack a pair of wellie boots!

    Christmas

Can some one tell me where the year went?!? No I thought not, it seems that another year has flown by and I am left sitting back wondering where it went... yet again, the same thing happens every time around.

This year I have the prospect of a South African Christmas holiday season, I am told that the 25th will be warm (maybe 28C+) but there could be a few drops of warm rain in the morning but for most of the actual day it'll be hot! Beats cold, windy rain in London I guess :)

    Living in South Africa

Cape Town is now my city of residence :) My fiancee and myself have been living here for the last 3 weeks now and plan on sticking around for at least two years. Bernie is from Cape Town (Muizenberg) but has been away for four years, so neither of us are sure of the price of bread or milk!!

From my front door I can see the back of Table Mountain, as well as the other mountain ranges in Cape Town (Cape Town is surrounded by mountains, not just Table Mountain).

All-in-All life is not too bad at the moment :)

    Iceland

Iceland is Europe’s western most country and also one of the most sparsely populated. The country is mainly an artic desert with beautiful waterfalls, volcanoes, mountains and glaciers. The glaciers are probably the most recognisable and distinctive features which covers almost 11.5% of the countries surface.

Because of Iceland’s unique landscape it has some of the best outdoor activities in Europe:

    The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most recognised attractions. Set amidst a field of black basalt lava, the powder-blue mineral rich waters are from a geothermal project - the temperature in this stunning lagoon averages 35-40°C

    Whale Watching

The crisp and clear North Atlantic around Iceland is teeming with whales of various species. There are many locations around Iceland that are ideal for whale watching

    Iceland Jeep Safaris

Due to Iceland having a rough and rugged landscape it can be difficult to get around and see all of the natural beauty on offer. Luckily 4x4 jeeps have been converted with high ground clearance, large snow tires and the latest safety and navigation equipment to take you to see the real Iceland
